MassEnergize began as a grassroots coalition of volunteers from Wayland and Natick, Massachusetts, aiming to empower their neighbors to take at least one action (and why not more?) to reduce climate change and raise local resilience.

To do so, MassEnergize volunteers research, vet and commit local partners for home energy assessments, solar PV, solar hot water, neighborhood solar, renewable electricity, electric vehicle group discounts, home energy monitoring, carpooling and rideshares, organic “waste” collection and composting, local activist opportunities, and so much more. Oftentimes these partnership come with group discounts. MassEnergize then brings them all to one table, to which they also invites the community. As a result

1. Neighbors can see all their opportunities to act in one glance and, without having to do the research, get estimates, etc., take easy steps to take that opportunity.
2. Partners share the work of outreach and get to concentrate on what they do best (installing PV, for instance).

We also strive to give hope by visibly demonstrating that each individual and household action does have impact on local GHG emissions. We are working on a way to show the impact of their indiiviual actions on their local community's footprint, their community's collective impact on their region's carbon footprint, and so forth. By setting our actions in the right context we can show our neighbors that worldwide carbon balance is an achievable goal, that we should commit as a community to doing our share of a complete solution, and that community action is made up of many individual actions that are easy to achieve. This impact function of the website is under development.

MassEnergize launched in September 2017 and is being test run in Wayland, mainly, through 2017 and 2018. After that we aim to invite other towns, cities and neighborhoods to use the MassEnergize online platform, promotional materials, strategies and partner networks. Each group will be able to adapt the program of offerings to their own local needs and opportunities, and will bring their own volunteers to do outreach. Contact us if you're interested!

Funding for MassEnergize was provided by the New England Grassroots Environment Fund. The New England Grassroots Environment Fund energizes and nurtures long-term civic engagement in local initiatives that create and maintain healthy, just, safe and sustainable communities using stories, tools and dollars to fuel local activism and social change. Since 1996, the Grassroots Fund’s core grant making program continues to fund nearly 150 grants annually, giving more than $4 million in 20 years to more than 2,000 community groups and initiatives covering more than 60 percent of New England’s cities and towns. Disclaimer: The Town of Wayland is participating in the 2017 Solarize Massachusetts program administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.   Members of Wayland’s Energy & Climate Committee assisted in a three-town competitive bid process (along with Lincoln and Sudbury) to select the contractors for that program, and the Town signed contracts with the awardees (SolarFlair and New England Solar Hot Water).  The Wayland Energy and Climate Committee and the Town of Wayland did not select, and does not have any other relationship with, any other MassEnergize partner.
